Shantou, China — A 10-year-old girl suffered injuries after being attacked by two lions at a zoo in Guangdong Province during an incident that has raised serious safety concerns about visitor interactions with animals. The attack happened on February 26, when a zookeeper mistakenly allowed her into a restricted feeding area, where she attempted to feed the lions.
Surveillance footage from the Shantou Zhongshan Park Zoo shows the girl standing close to the enclosure when a lioness suddenly lunged through the bars and grabbed her leg. The terrifying scenes were captured as the girl screamed for help while being dragged by the lioness. A zookeeper quickly intervened, using a metal rod to free her during a frantic struggle that lasted approximately 30 seconds.
Despite the alarming nature of the event, the girl sustained only minor scrapes and was transported to a local hospital. There, she received precautionary medical attention, including a rabies shot, and was later released. Interestingly, her parents have reportedly refrained from placing blame on the zoo for the incident.
Zoo officials believe the lioness’s behavior was triggered by the meat the girl held in her hand. This incident has prompted serious questions about the zoo’s safety protocols, revealing that the feeding area is meant for older visitors only. An internal review indicated that the zookeeper in question had disregarded these guidelines by permitting the minor to enter the area.
A statement released by the zoo acknowledged the lapse in judgment, stating that the policy allowing visitors into the animal isolation area had been mismanaged. Following the incident, the employee responsible has been suspended and reassigned.
In response to the attack, the Shantou Zhongshan Park Zoo has temporarily closed its doors to conduct a comprehensive safety review. The zoo, known for offering hands-on animal feeding experiences for families, is now under scrutiny as officials work to ensure similar incidents do not occur in the future.
As for the lions involved, these powerful predators possess strong jaws and claws capable of inflicting serious injuries. Adult male lions can weigh between 330 and 550 pounds, while females typically range from 265 to 395 pounds. Their natural hunting instincts can be easily triggered, especially by movement or the presence of food, which highlights the inherent risks of close encounters, particularly for young children.
Authorities from the relevant government bodies have not yet disclosed whether additional penalties or new regulations will be instituted as a result of this investigation. The community remains on edge as families reflect on the balance between educational experiences at zoos and the need for stringent safety measures.
