Wisconsin man steals his 73-year-old father’s car after stabbing him to death

MAUSTON, WI – Authorities are piecing together the final hours of Michael Sanders, a 73-year-old Mauston resident, whose life ended in a violent attack that has left a close-knit community in mourning. The investigation has cast a somber spotlight on the longtime local, who was found dead in his motel room on January 21.

Sanders was discovered by police at the Willows Motel, where he resided, after interstate law enforcement raised concerns about his wellbeing. That afternoon, officers were alerted by Indiana authorities who had detained his son, Jacob Sanders, in Terre Haute, several states away, driving the elder Sanders’ cherished 1989 Chevrolet Caprice. Officers noted blood on Jacob’s hand during the traffic stop, further prompting a welfare check on Michael.

When officers entered the motel room, they found Michael Sanders lying on the bed, bearing numerous stab wounds that had resulted in his death. According to medical examiners, Michael endured more than two dozen stab wounds, including defensive injuries on his hands as he apparently tried to fend off the attack. One of his fingers and his thumb were nearly severed, and he suffered additional trauma to his ear.

Investigators soon learned that the victim’s son, who lived in an adjacent room at the motel, was considered the primary suspect. A search of Jacob Sanders’ quarters turned up a Karambit-style knife with what appeared to be blood on its curved blade.

The loss of Michael Sanders has shocked those who knew him, as the investigation has revealed tensions within the family in the weeks leading up to his death. Interviews with relatives indicated that Michael and his son had a contentious relationship and that family members had taken steps to modify life insurance arrangements to remove Jacob as the sole beneficiary.

Police say they had responded to the motel the day before the homicide after Michael called for help to have his son removed from his room. During that encounter, Jacob reportedly expressed irritation about his father’s behavior, attributing his anger to perceived provocation during their disputes.

The grim details outlined by the autopsy underscore the brutality of the attack. Investigators determined that many of Michael’s wounds were consistent with defensive efforts, suggesting he fought back fiercely against his assailant.

Jacob Sanders, 34, remains in custody in Indiana awaiting extradition to Wisconsin, where he is expected to face a first-degree intentional homicide charge. At the time of his arrest, Jacob reportedly told officers he was traveling to Tennessee to visit his grandmother’s grave.

As Michael Sanders’ friends and family process the tragedy, authorities continue to work through the evidence surrounding the case. The Juneau County Sheriff’s Office and Mauston Police Department are collaborating on the investigation, determined to ensure justice for the slain father.

Officials have not yet announced a date for Jacob Sanders’ return to Wisconsin or pending court proceedings. The community waits for further answers in a case that has left many struggling to understand how a family’s internal conflict could come to such a violent end.
