Winter Weather Causes Major Road Closures and Multi-Vehicle Accidents Across Louisiana

METAIRIE, La. — High winds, poor visibility, and icy conditions have led to major road closures in the area. The Causeway Bridge is currently closed, with police anticipating a possible reopening around 10:30 a.m. or 11 a.m. I-55 has been shut down in both directions due to the icy roadways, while east and westbound lanes at the Mississippi state line in St. Tammany Parish have reopened.

In Lafourche and Terrebonne Parishes, US 90 has been closed by the State Police, and the Jackson Street Bridge in Thibodaux is also closed. In St. John the Baptist Parish, icy roadways have led to the closure of the Bonnet Carre Spillway in both directions, causing congestion up to Clearview Parkway. Additionally, St. Charles Parish deputies are dealing with a multi-vehicle accident on Interstate 310 Southbound, resulting in complete lane blockage.

Despite these closures, the Hale Boggs Bridge has reopened, and in Jefferson Parish, two-way traffic has started on the new/southbound Belle Chasse Bridge to accommodate both northbound and southbound traffic. In St. James Parish, the Veterans Memorial Bridge in Gramercy remains closed to traffic in both directions due to unsafe driving conditions, while the Bayou Chevreuil Bridge in Vacherie remains open at this time. However, the Sunshine Bridge in St. James/Convent has been reopened.

Leaders in the area are closely monitoring the situation as a winter weather system brings rain and freezing temperatures. For the latest updates on road closures and weather conditions, stay tuned to WDSU. To check for road closures near you, visit the official website.
