Marital writings, an employment change and new forensic details have emerged, though authorities have not connected any of them to a cause.
GRAND HAVEN TOWNSHIP, Mich. — More than a month after a Michigan father killed his wife and six children, investigators know far more about how the family died than why. The expanding record includes a handgun purchased days earlier, intentionally set fires and the wife’s older writings about infidelity, but authorities have not announced a motive linking those facts together.
What has been established through the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office and autopsy findings is that Kristopher Karolkiewicz, 47, shot Amanda “Mandy” Karolkiewicz, 39, and their six children, then died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Investigators said fires were deliberately set inside the family’s Grand Haven Township home after Amanda and the children were killed. Their deaths were classified as homicides; Kristopher’s was classified as a suicide. Police have said they are not looking for another suspect. The unresolved portion of the case is the reason for the killings and the precise chain of events before them.
Some of the strongest public evidence concerns preparation immediately before the deaths. Authorities confirmed through later reporting that Kristopher purchased the handgun used in the shootings on July 16. The family was found about eight days later. Michigan State Police fire investigators determined that the home had several separate points where fires were intentionally started. Multiple smoke alarms were also found to have been removed. Those findings establish deliberate actions surrounding the killings, but officials have not publicly interpreted them as evidence of a particular motive or said exactly when the planning began.
A separate set of evidence comes from Amanda’s own writings. In Reddit posts linked to her through biographical details, she described meeting Kristopher in 2008 when she was an intern and he was older and divorced. She said they later married and built a family. Years into the relationship, she alleged, Kristopher became involved with another intern who was about the same age Amanda had been when they met. She described the discovery as a deep betrayal and wrote candidly about trying to decide whether the marriage could be repaired.
Amanda said their children strongly influenced that decision. In one post, she wrote, “I love my kids more than I hate my husband right now.” In another, she said leaving a marriage while responsible for six children seemed frightening. She also referred to what she saw in hindsight as “major red flags” and discussed counseling sessions that she believed did not produce the progress she wanted. Those comments establish that Amanda viewed the marriage as seriously troubled at various points. They do not establish that an argument about infidelity occurred before the killings or that the affair she described was a cause of the violence.
That limitation is central to understanding the case. A motive is not simply any hardship found in a person’s recent history. Investigators would need evidence showing how a circumstance relates to the decision to commit the killings. So far, authorities have not publicly made such a connection. The same caution applies to Kristopher’s career. The American Heart Association said he had served as national vice president of sales and marketing from September 2023 until his employment ended earlier in July. The organization declined to discuss why his employment ended. Police have not said the change was connected to the shootings.
The basic timeline on July 24 began with reports of smoke rather than gunfire. Emergency responders went to the area in the morning after residents noticed a smoky odor but did not initially identify a source. About three hours later, additional calls led responders back to Riverside Trail, where smoke was coming from the Karolkiewicz residence. Firefighters entered the home and found the family members. Investigators later determined that the shootings preceded the fire. Some of the victims had been found in bedrooms, and authorities reported no evidence of a struggle when questioned about the scene.
The six children ranged in age from 5 to 15. The sheriff’s office initially withheld their names, while relatives and later memorial notices identified them as Keegan, Bennett, Caroline, Ella, Smith and Teddy. Four were boys and two were girls; Caroline and Ella had been adopted from China. Amanda had recently taken the two girls on a trip there, writing online about their heritage and her excitement at sharing the experience with them. Funeral notices and relatives later described each child through school activities, hobbies and family memories rather than through the violence that made their names nationally known.
Amanda also had a public identity separate from the marital problems documented in her posts. Grand Haven Area Public Schools said she was a substitute teacher who had worked in several buildings. Earlier recognition from the district praised her empathy and patience, especially with students struggling through difficult days. She wrote about parenting, faith and family life and had shared parts of her household online for years. Her parents, Becky and Steve Lawwill, described her after the killings as devoted to both her family and her students.
The contrast between that public record and Amanda’s private discussion of marital problems attracted attention after the deaths, but it does not necessarily represent a contradiction. Social media posts about children, work and travel can coexist with private conflict. The authenticated Reddit material adds information that was not visible in her family-oriented posts, yet it remains only one source describing the marriage. Kristopher cannot respond to the accusations, and investigators have not released communications or interview evidence that would independently establish the full condition of the relationship immediately before the killings.
There are also limits to what the forensic evidence can answer by itself. A gun purchase can establish when a weapon was obtained. Fire patterns can establish that a blaze was deliberately started. Autopsies can establish causes and manners of death. Removed smoke alarms can help investigators reconstruct what happened in the house. None automatically explains the reason one family member chose to kill seven others. Investigators may seek that explanation in digital communications, financial or employment records, interviews with relatives and acquaintances, and other evidence, but the sheriff’s office has not publicly detailed all of the material being reviewed.
With Kristopher dead, the investigation also differs from a conventional homicide case. There will be no prosecution in which a charging document, preliminary hearing or trial could force the government to publicly describe its theory and supporting evidence. Investigators can issue findings, but they may be unable to determine with certainty what was in Kristopher’s mind. Ottawa County officials have acknowledged the possibility that the tragedy may never be completely understood even as detectives continue building the most precise timeline possible.
While that work continued, the community turned toward Amanda and the children. Vigils followed the deaths, schools made support available and relatives organized an Aug. 24 celebration of life. A foundation created in Amanda’s name is intended to support local students, including music and arts opportunities and help with everyday needs. Family members said they wanted the memorial to emphasize the seven victims’ personalities and lives rather than Kristopher’s actions.
For now, the verified record supports several conclusions but stops short of the one that has drawn the most attention. Authorities say Kristopher killed Amanda and the six children, deliberately set fires and then died by suicide. Amanda had previously alleged infidelity and described serious marital concerns. Kristopher had recently left his job and recently purchased the handgun. Investigators have not announced that any one of those circumstances, or any combination of them, explains the killings. Until they do, the motive remains unknown and the investigation remains open.
