Wichita Man Faces 39 Years for Stabbing Death of Children’s Mother Amid Domestic Turmoil

WICHITA, Kan. — A 26-year-old man has entered a guilty plea for the murder of his children’s mother in a violent domestic altercation that transpired in July 2025, a case that has drawn significant attention due to the presence of young children during the tragic events.

Edward A. Millan-Volcan pleaded guilty on May 29 in Sedgwick County District Court to charges of first-degree murder in the death of 27-year-old Sinay Y. Leon-Montoya and attempted first-degree murder in the attack on Leon-Montoya’s friend, 26-year-old Germany Torres Figueroa. Judge Kevin Smith is set to pronounce the defendant’s sentence on July 16, with a minimum prison term of 38 years and nine months looming over him.

The incident unfolded on July 17, 2025, when Leon-Montoya made a frantic 911 call to report a domestic dispute. The communication was hampered by a language barrier, complicating the situation. Leon-Montoya later returned to her apartment in the 6800 block of West Par Lane, where she was fatally stabbed. Just 17 minutes after her initial call, police were dispatched to the apartment for another domestic disturbance, discovering Torres Figueroa injured outside and Leon-Montoya inside, shortly thereafter pronounced dead at a hospital.

Authorities reported that Leon-Montoya suffered over 60 stab wounds, several of which were fatal. Investigators found a tool in the apartment that had been used in the attack, underscoring the brutality of the crime. Earlier reports indicated that during her call, Leon-Montoya had informed dispatchers that Millan-Volcan was threatening both her and their children, which was a critical detail in piecing together the timeline of events.

The timeline became pivotal, as Millan-Volcan remained at the apartment when police arrived. Initially booked on multiple charges, including aggravated kidnapping and child endangerment, those charges were dismissed as part of a plea agreement that left only the most severe counts. With the entry of his guilty pleas, prosecutors no longer need to take the case to trial, marking a significant step towards closure for Leon-Montoya’s family.

In a twist to the incident, Torres Figueroa was seriously injured while attempting to intervene during the attack and faced a long recovery. Her survival has added complexity to the case, as Millan-Volcan now faces both homicide and attempted murder charges stemming from the same violent altercation.

Leon-Montoya’s life before the incident painted a portrait of a woman striving for a better future. Originally from Venezuela and having moved to the U.S. in 2023, she aimed to provide her two young sons with more opportunities. As court records reveal, she was making efforts to end her relationship with Millan-Volcan, who has been described as her estranged husband.

The legal proceedings are set to continue with the upcoming sentencing. Although the minimum prison term has been established, the final decision rests with the court, which will take into consideration the emotional impacts on Leon-Montoya’s children and the surviving victim, who may provide statements at the sentencing hearing.

As this tragic case unfolds, it underscores the devastating effects of domestic violence, leaving lingering questions about the safety and well-being of families caught in cycles of abuse. The Wichita community and the families involved will await the court’s decision as they process the impact of this grim episode.
