Venice Man Faces Second-Degree Murder Charge After Fatal Altercation with Boss Behind Trailer

Venice, Fla. — A 42-year-old man has been charged with second-degree murder following the alleged killing of his boss outside a local business early on April 6. Richard Dustin Barker was taken into custody after officers discovered Jeffrey Hubbard, 67, unresponsive behind a trailer.

The incident initially emerged from a report of a physical altercation around 6:02 a.m., with onlookers witnessing a struggle between two men. A witness described seeing one man being dragged towards a pickup truck, which left the scene momentarily before returning with a trailer. First responders arrived to find Hubbard on the ground, and despite efforts to revive him, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators quickly linked Barker to the crime after he reportedly made incriminating statements to police. He was identified as the driver of the red pickup truck found on-site and was taken into custody shortly after. A white tank top, bloody and wrapped around Hubbard’s neck, was recovered, enhancing the evidence against Barker.

According to police reports, Barker allegedly admitted to planning the attack on Hubbard. He claimed to have worn a motorcycle helmet to protect himself during the altercation and used the tank top as a ligature. Law enforcement stated that Barker described a struggle in which he was scratched by Hubbard before ultimately causing his death. After the incident, Barker attempted to conceal evidence, removing items from Hubbard’s pockets and trying to wash away blood from the sidewalk.

Authorities emphasized the relationship between the two men, clarifying that Barker was an employee of Hubbard’s at the time of the incident. However, the motive for the alleged murder remains unclear as no specifics about any prior dispute have been publicly released. Venice Police Chief Andy Leisenring noted that although such serious crimes are rare in the area, they do occur.

The event unfolded in a commercial district where various businesses were beginning their daily operations, causing some disturbance as police launched a thorough investigation. The scene was methodically processed, with vehicles and physical evidence carefully documented.

Barker faces charges not only of second-degree murder but also of tampering with evidence, reflecting his alleged attempts to mask the crime. While initially lacking detail, subsequent court filings revealed more about Barker’s alleged intentions and actions surrounding the incident. The charges signal serious accusations, although a charge alone does not imply guilt in the legal system.

As law enforcement continues to investigate, several aspects remain pending, including the final determinations of the medical examiner concerning the cause of death. Surveillance footage, additional witness statements, and other investigative materials are yet to be disclosed.

Public safety remains a priority for local authorities, who assert that the community is not under threat from this isolated incident. The legal proceedings against Barker will unfold in Sarasota County, with a timeline that hinges on both the ongoing investigation and forthcoming court appearances.
