Utah Parents Arrested in Chilling Case of Child Torture and Death After Falsifying 911 Report

TREMONTON, Utah — A father and mother have been charged following the death of their 11-year-old son, who investigators allege was tortured and murdered in their home. Authorities contend that the child’s father attempted to disguise the death as a suicide by hanging.

Brigham Young Merrell, 35, has been charged with homicide by child abuse and child torture in the death of Moroni Merrell. His wife, 36-year-old Melinda Marie Merrell, faces allegations of child torture. The arrests were announced in May after a prolonged investigation that began with a 911 call on September 21, 2025.

In the initial call, Brigham Merrell reported that he found his son hanging by a coaxial cable. When first responders arrived, however, they observed him kneeling next to the child and not performing CPR as he had claimed. Moroni was taken to a local hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. During subsequent interviews with police, the father’s recounting of events became inconsistent, leading investigators to question his narrative.

Key evidence in the case includes home surveillance footage, which reportedly shows Brigham Merrell carrying the child’s lifeless body from a different room to the location where he claimed the hanging occurred. Police indicated that the video contradicts his story, depicting him transporting his son past first responders who were at the door. As paramedics attempted to revive Moroni, Brigham Merrell allegedly left the scene to change his clothes, a decision investigators interpreted as an effort to hide or destroy evidence.

Forensic examinations further challenged the father’s claims. According to the arrest affidavit, the child’s injuries were inconsistent with a hanging. Investigators documented ligature marks that appeared to suggest an external force was involved, as well as bruises consistent with recent physical abuse. When questioned about these marks, Brigham Merrell allegedly suggested they could have come from a belt, though both parents denied knowing how the child was injured.

The investigation unveiled a troubling pattern of alleged abuse that extended beyond the events of that fateful day. In the days following Moroni’s death, items were discarded from the home, surfaces were repainted, and physical changes were made to rooms. Authorities indicated that these actions suggested an attempt to conceal evidence of ongoing abuse. Reports from surviving children revealed years of mistreatment, including severe beatings and restricted access to food. Some described being punished with various household items, and others recounted being confined in a dog run during disciplinary measures.

The allegations against the Merrells included admissions of understanding that their discipline methods were dangerous. In statements attributed to Melinda Merrell, she indicated she would assess children for bruises and adjust her methods accordingly. Court documents revealed that both parents expressed a lack of awareness regarding the legality of their actions, claiming they were not properly educated about acceptable disciplinary practices.

The couple’s arrests were the culmination of a comprehensive investigation that included forensic analysis and multiple interviews. Brigham Merrell is being held on serious charges while Melinda Merrell faces allegations of child torture. The remaining children in the household have been referred to child welfare services for their safety.

As the case progresses, the Tremonton community is grappling with the shocking details that unfolded from what began as a 911 call. Law enforcement officials have vowed to pursue the case rigorously, ensuring justice for both Moroni and the other children impacted by the allegations of abuse.
