UMG Strikes ‘Multi-Dimensional’ Deal with TikTok, Paving the Way for Return of Top Artists

Los Angeles, California – Universal Music Group and TikTok have recently reached a comprehensive agreement, allowing UMG’s lineup of artists like Taylor Swift, Drake, and Olivia Rodrigo to once again connect with over one billion TikTok users. The music giant had temporarily removed its catalog from the platform back in February due to contract-related issues.

The new deal not only marks the artists’ return to TikTok but also addresses concerns regarding generative AI within the music industry. Both UMG and TikTok have committed to collaborating on AI development that upholds the integrity of human artistry and ensures fair compensation for artists and songwriters. Additionally, TikTok has pledged to work with UMG to eliminate any unauthorized AI-generated music on the platform.

Ole Obermann, TikTok’s Global Head of Music Business Development, expressed his excitement about welcoming back UMG and UMPG to the platform. He emphasized the importance of responsibly developing AI tools to foster creativity and fan engagement while preserving the essence of human creativity.

Apart from reconciling on AI issues, the agreement also introduces new monetization opportunities for artists through TikTok’s growing e-commerce features. The platform is dedicated to enhancing its tools to empower artists in utilizing TikTok effectively, including providing analytics and integrated ticketing options.

Both parties have assured a swift process in reintroducing UMG artists to TikTok, highlighting their commitment to supporting the artistic community and enhancing the digital music landscape. This renewed partnership signifies a significant step towards leveraging technology to benefit the music industry while safeguarding artistic integrity and creativity.
