PEORIA, Ill. — A 21-year-old man is facing multiple charges after a violent incident involving his girlfriend that lasted more than eight hours, culminating in her escape when he fell asleep. Johnnie J. Chiaravalle has been charged with two counts of aggravated domestic battery, one count of domestic battery, and one count of unlawful restraint.
Following a Tuesday court hearing, a judge ordered that Chiaravalle remain in custody until his trial. Prosecutors detailed the circumstances leading to the charges, noting that the woman sustained serious injuries during the incident but was treated and released from the hospital.
The events unfolded on April 13, when police were dispatched to the East Bluff Community Center after receiving reports of an assault. Upon arrival, officers found the victim visibly injured, with severe swelling around her eyes and various cuts and bruises across her body. She informed law enforcement that her boyfriend had attacked her and prevented her from leaving their home, detailing a brutal night of violence that extended into the following day.
According to prosecutors, the woman reported that Chiaravalle physically assaulted her multiple times, fracturing her nose and strangling her on several occasions. She indicated that he also threw knives at her, resulting in cuts on her legs. The assault allegedly continued until Chiaravalle fell asleep, prompting her to escape and seek help.
When officers located Chiaravalle at their residence, he offered a different explanation, claiming he had been unaware of the incident and suggesting that another individual might have inflicted her injuries. A search of the home uncovered hair that appeared to belong to the victim, as well as blood-like stains and several knives, which are part of the ongoing investigation.
Chiaravalle is set to appear for arraignment on May 13, where formal charges will be read, and he will enter a plea. Until then, he is presumed innocent but remains in Peoria County Jail.
