Train Derailment Forces Closure of Interstate 40 near Gallup, New Mexico

GALLUP, N.M. – New Mexico State Police announced the closure of all lanes on Interstate 40 due to a recent train derailment near the state line between New Mexico and Arizona. The train was carrying non-odor propane and gasoline, prompting evacuations for residents within a two-mile radius from the half-mile marker on Interstate 40 in New Mexico. A shelter-in-place location has been established at Lupton Chapter House as a precautionary measure.

Both State police and Arizona DPS have imposed traffic closures in their respective states to address the aftermath of the train derailment. The incident has caused several road closures, including State Road 118 northbound of the interstate, Route 12, County Road 1 in Tseyatoh, and Lupton Road. Interstate 40 exit 333 is available for detours on State Road 191 in both directions.

Authorities anticipate the indefinite closure of the interstate until the fire resulting from the derailment is extinguished, and all safety concerns are resolved. Hazmat teams are on-site providing necessary support, with firefighters opting not to actively combat the flames to ensure the safety of surrounding areas.

The Apache County Sheriff’s Office and McKinley County Fire and Rescue are treating the incident as a hazardous materials situation. The road closure is expected to last for an extended period while crews work diligently to contain the fire. U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg issued a statement in response to the derailment, emphasizing safety coordination across various agencies.

Officials from BNSF are currently investigating the cause of the incident, confirming that there have been no reported injuries thus far. The situation is ongoing, and updates can be accessed via the KOAT App for the most recent information.
