EAST NORTHPORT, N.Y. — An 18-year-old has been charged with second-degree murder following the death of his grandmother’s fiancé, who was reportedly attacked inside a trailer early Sunday morning. Authorities say Noel Bermudez-Chin called 911 shortly after the incident that left 61-year-old Joseph Falvo dead.
The incident occurred around 3:42 a.m. at a family residence on Catherine Street. When officers arrived, they discovered Falvo suffering from multiple stab wounds in the living room. He was quickly transported to Huntington Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Bermudez-Chin was apprehended about a mile from the scene on Laurel Hill Road shortly after police arrived.
According to prosecutors, the assault began while Falvo was sleeping on the couch. Reports indicate that Bermudez-Chin allegedly poured boiling oil and hot water on Falvo before stabbing him multiple times, including in the back, neck, and chest. Prosecutors indicated in court that he confessed to stabbing Falvo five or six times before delivering a final blow to the stomach.
Despite the clarity around the charge and the identities of those involved, details surrounding the motive for the attack remain unclear. Authorities have not disclosed whether any other family members were present during the incident, nor have they revealed what led up to the violence. Court documents have yet to provide a clear motive for Bermudez-Chin’s aggression.
Defense attorney Peter Mayer emphasized the need for caution, requesting that the public refrain from jumping to conclusions about the case. He stated that his client is presumed innocent until proven guilty, and Bermudez-Chin reportedly entered a denial during his court appearance.

Cecilia Bermudez, Falvo’s fiancée and the defendant’s grandmother, revealed that the family had been living in the trailer during the reconstruction of their home. She expressed sorrow over losing Falvo, whom she described as a loving partner with plans for a wedding this July.
Family members have also spoken about Noel’s mental health struggles, noting a previous diagnosis of schizophrenia. Some relatives conveyed their concerns about his well-being, shedding light on the mental health challenges that may have played a role in the tragic outcome.
As the legal proceedings unfold, Bermudez-Chin remains in custody without bail. His next court appearance is scheduled for April 3, where the prosecution will continue to build its case.
