Tragic End for Rising Star: Former The Voice Nigeria Contestant Ifunanya Nwangene Dies from Snake Bite in Abuja

Abuja, Nigeria β€” The music community is mourning the loss of Ifunanya Nwangene, a vibrant talent and former contestant on “The Voice Nigeria,” who tragically died on January 31 after suffering a snake bite in her apartment. The incident highlights the risks posed by wildlife in urban areas, an issue that continues to affect many Nigerians.

Nwangene, 26, was reportedly awakened by the venomous snake while she was sleeping. Her music director, Sam C. Ezugwu, shared that she was quickly taken to a local clinic, but the facility lacked the antivenom necessary to treat her. She was then transferred to the Federal Medical Centre Jabi for urgent care.

Ezugwu described a devastating scene upon arriving at the hospital, noting that medical personnel were working to stabilize her condition. β€œShe was unable to speak, but could manage hand gestures. Breathing was a struggle for her,” he explained. According to him, while the hospital had one required antivenom, the other essential type was unavailable. Efforts to bring the needed antivenom proved futile before her untimely death.

In response to these claims, Federal Medical Centre Jabi stated they provided comprehensive medical care and treatment, including resuscitation, intravenous fluids, and antivenom administration.

Following the tragedy, animal control officers responded to Nwangene’s residence and removed two snakes, one confirmed to be a cobra, raising questions about safety in urban settings. A friend of Nwangene reported that she had been jolted awake by the snake bite, leading to her medical emergency.

Nwangene was known for her powerful performances, notably on her audition for “The Voice Nigeria” in 2021, where she captivated judges with her soulful rendition of Rihanna’s “Take a Bow.” Her talent earned her a spot on Waje’s team, one of Nigeria’s celebrated artists. The soprano’s singing style blended jazz and opera, and she was gaining traction on YouTube under the name NANYAH.

At the time of her death, Nwangene was actively working on new music, including a collaboration with fellow artist Tbrass and preparations for her first solo concert. Her passing has left a significant void in the music scene, with many expressing their grief on social media.

Tbrass has described her loss as irreplaceable, emphasizing her contribution to the music community in Abuja and beyond. The Amemuso Choir, where Nwangene was a member, characterized her as a rising star at the forefront of sharing her exceptional talent.

The danger of snake bites remains an ongoing public health concern in Nigeria, particularly in rural areas. The World Health Organization estimates that venomous snakes cause substantial fatalities annually, with thousands of cases reported in Nigeria alone. Cobras, native to the region, can cause severe respiratory complications if not treated promptly.

Medical experts continue to stress the importance of immediate transport for snake bite victims to facilities equipped with antivenom. Remaining calm during transport can slow venom progression, making timely intervention crucial.

Nwangene’s remarkable journey as both an architect and aspiring singer showcased her determination. Balancing multiple careers is common for many Nigerian artists, but her unique blend of talents set her apart as a remarkable figure in the industry. The Amemuso Choir has promised to share further details about her burial arrangements through their official social media channels.
