Tragic Domestic Shooting in Gilbert: Man Confesses After Allegedly Killing Girlfriend

GILBERT, Ariz. — A man has been charged with murder following the fatal shooting of his girlfriend early Monday morning in a domestic incident that has left the community in shock. Judah Chesley, 26, allegedly confessed to the act shortly after it occurred, first reaching out to his father and then calling emergency services.

Police responded to the scene shortly before 1 a.m. at a residence in Gilbert, where they discovered Chesley with blood on his hands and clothing. Investigators claim he shot his girlfriend in the face using a Glock 9 mm handgun, which was later recovered nearby bearing bloodstains. The identity of the victim has not been released as authorities work to notify her family.

Following the shooting, Chesley called his father to explain the incident but struggled to articulate the reasons behind his actions. He then contacted a 911 dispatcher, expressing confusion and disorientation, and acknowledged being intoxicated at the time. “I woke up in a drunken stupor,” he reportedly said.

Family members present during the incident told investigators that they heard nothing while asleep. Chesley’s parents characterized him as someone prone to agitation and admitted he owned various firearms. They also noted a decline in his mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic, mentioning his hesitation to seek professional help.

The couple had a history of conflict, with relatives describing recurrent arguments and tension. Reports surfaced of a previous incident where Chesley allegedly used a Taser on his girlfriend, raising concerns about the volatile nature of their relationship.

Chesley has been booked on suspicion of second-degree murder, though formal charges had not been filed by Tuesday. Police are still investigating the circumstances leading to the shooting, with a focus on possible motives that may include Chesley’s mental state and the couple’s tumultuous relationship.

As authorities continue to gather evidence and conduct interviews, Chesley remains in custody awaiting further legal proceedings. The investigation is ongoing, and additional charges could be considered as more information comes to light.
