HARRISON COUNTY, Ind. — Tragedy struck a quiet community in southern Indiana on Friday night when a dispute at a local residence escalated into a fatal shooting, leaving two elderly individuals dead and another person wounded. Indiana State Police and local authorities were dispatched to a house in the 3000 block of Mosquito Creek Road near Laconia shortly after 6 p.m. following reports of gunfire.
Upon arrival, law enforcement officers found one individual, who sustained a non-fatal gunshot wound to the arm. This individual was subsequently transported to UofL Hospital for medical treatment. During a meticulous search of the premises, police discovered the bodies of 84-year-old Donald Weaver and 82-year-old Virginia Scofield just outside the back door of the house, both victims of gunshot wounds.
Preliminary investigations by Indiana State Police revealed a confrontation earlier in the evening between Weaver and the injured party. The altercation reportedly spiraled out of control, leading to Weaver arming himself and shooting the other individual in the arm. The wounded party managed to escape and sought help from a nearby neighbor, who called 911.
In the minutes that followed, additional gunshots were detected emanating from the residence. Investigators believe that during this sequence, Weaver fatally shot Scofield before committing suicide.
