EL PASO, Texas — A tragic series of events culminating from an unnoticed crime came to light when a neighbor reported foul odors and an ajar garage door at a local home. The police response, initially prompted by a routine 911 call, led to the shocking discovery of a body and the subsequent arrest of a man for murder.
On the afternoon of August 18, officers were dispatched to the 6800 block of Villa Hermosa Drive after the neighbor’s concern grew over an open door and an unusual smell emanating from the residence. Upon entering the home for a safety check, officers found 59-year-old David Edward De Coste’s body wrapped in plastic in the garage. The investigation quickly escalated into a homicide probe when it was revealed that his son, John Michael De Coste, 29, and 28-year-old Idalia Nunez De La Torre were present in the home.
Authorities believe the events leading to David De Coste’s death occurred between August 4 and August 7. John De Coste reportedly claimed that a confrontation ensued after he discovered his father engaged in an intimate act with De La Torre, a recent houseguest. What began as an argument reportedly escalated into physical violence, with John De Coste alleging that his father attempted to retrieve a firearm during their altercation.
John De Coste admitted to slapping and kicking his father, actions that investigators later suggested resulted in David De Coste suffering fatal injuries, including blunt-force trauma and a skull fracture. An autopsy confirmed the cause of death. The younger De Coste later expressed hesitation in reporting the incident due to an outstanding warrant, leading police to believe that the body remained undiscovered inside the home for several days.
In a twist to the investigation, court documents revealed that John De Coste ordered a body bag online prior to disposing of his father’s remains in the garage. Alongside De La Torre, who is accused of assisting in moving the body, he allegedly engaged in a cover-up that included attempts to clean the scene. De La Torre is charged with tampering with or fabricating physical evidence, particularly related to the body’s manipulation after the crime.
Police discovered the body thanks to the persistent observation of a concerned neighbor, who reported seeing the garage door partially open for days along with the disruptive smell. The team responding to the scene was not initially aware of the presence of other individuals inside the home, leading to the deployment of a SWAT team and crisis negotiators. Eventually, both John De Coste and De La Torre surrendered to the authorities.
David De Coste, whose past included service as a detective for the El Paso Police Department and former military service, has thus far had his death shrouded in mystery and legal proceedings. Following the discovery of his body, his son was charged with murder and related offenses, while De La Torre faces charges concerning the aftermath of the alleged homicide.
As the case progresses through the El Paso court system, an array of challenges will face the prosecution, as they must present solid evidence to substantiate the accusations leveled against John De Coste. Both he and De La Torre remain in custody, awaiting further developments in their respective legal situations, with the case underscoring the tragic consequences of domestic violence and familial strife.
