Tragedy Strikes: Eight Family Members, Including Four Children, Killed in Montana Dinner Shooting and Arson by Estranged Relative

BILLINGS, Mont. — An evening family gathering turned tragic when eight relatives, including four children, were shot dead in a home just outside Billings on August 23, 2026. The suspected shooter, 44-year-old Alan Smith, had been asked to leave the family home weeks prior and returned uninvited, according to a surviving family member.

The violence erupted as the family came together for dinner at a residence on White Star Circle. Among those killed were Smith’s grandmother, parents, younger sister, and four children, confirmed Brad Ireland, whose former wife and two children were among the victims. After the attack, the suspect allegedly set the house on fire before being confronted by law enforcement officers in the backyard.

On August 25, investigators confirmed that four adults and four children died in the incident, which was marked by horror and confusion. Smith, along with family members Dana Smith, 73, and Barbara Smith, 72, along with Megan Ireland-Ghekiere, 39, and children Owen Ireland, 13; Chloe Ireland, 7; Landon Ghekiere, 15; and Charlotte Ghekiere, 12 lost their lives in the shooting. Smith ultimately sustained a fatal self-inflicted gunshot wound during the event. Officials stated that there is no ongoing threat to the community.

The tragedy unfolded shortly after 6 p.m. when a 911 call alerted authorities to an active shooter situation. As officers arrived, they heard shots ringing out and observed smoke emanating from the residence. Within minutes, the home was engulfed in flames, and attempts to rescue the victims were hampered by the fire’s intensity.

Police engaged with Smith, but he retreated into the burning home, where the chaos continued. The need to prioritize fire suppression and secure the scene complicated the response. Firefighters had to transport water to the scene as the area lacked municipal services, leaving resources stretched thin until the blaze was brought under control hours later.

The sudden loss of life devastated a tightly-knit family. The children included a great-grandmother in her 90s, and a family friend noted the tragedy encompassed four generations. Charlotte Ghekiere, one of the deceased children, attempted to call for help during the attack, an act that family members honored as heroic amid the horrific events.

Megan Ghekiere’s husband, Adam, was on duty as a firefighter when he received reports of the incident at his in-laws’ home. Unable to reach anyone by phone, he faced a gut-wrenching wait outside the scene, later learning of the loss of his wife and children. Family dinner gatherings were tradition, and he expressed disbelief that his children were present that evening.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing. Alan Smith had previously lived with his family until weeks before the incident when they asked him to move out due to escalating tensions. Concerns about his behavior had been raised for years, although he had no prior violent history. Family members reflected on the deep emotional scars left by such a violent act, emphasizing the loving nature of the family.

Authorities indicated that the complexities of the case would require thorough investigation, especially with the fire complicating forensic efforts. As recovery efforts continued and families mourned, officers assured the community that all victims were accounted for by August 27.

This incident is a stark reminder of the potential for violence to erupt in familiar settings, profoundly impacting families and communities alike. Investigators are expected to delve into the root causes and warning signs that led to this tragic situation, while the community processes the deep grief and loss it has endured.
