Novokuznetsk, Russia — Two senior doctors from a maternity hospital in Siberia were taken into custody for alleged negligence linked to the deaths of nine infants earlier this month. The arrests were announced by the Investigative Committee of Russia following a troubling series of fatalities at Novokuznetsk Maternity Hospital No. 1 between January 4 and January 12.
The chief physician and the acting head of the intensive care unit were apprehended on January 14, during a period marked by the New Year holiday in Russia. Reports indicate that 234 children were born at the hospital within a six-week span, with 17 listed in critical condition in the intensive care unit. Of these, 16 were born prematurely and all suffered from severe intrauterine infections and extremely low birth weights, complicating their medical conditions.
Svetlana Petrenko, a spokesperson for the Investigative Committee, outlined that forensic examinations are currently being conducted to ascertain the specific factors that led to these distressing outcomes. The tragedy has raised significant concerns about the hospital’s operational capabilities, with claims that it had previously received multiple warnings from health authorities over inadequate resources.
According to local reports, inspections between August and November reported alarming deficiencies, including a shortage of essential medications for high-risk conditions, raising doubts about the hospital’s ability to manage critically ill newborns effectively. The facility has since ceased accepting new patients due to an outbreak of respiratory infections, despite the hospital’s assertions that staff shortages — which have reportedly impacted service delivery — do not exist.
