Texas woman and her boyfriend move away while her 12-year-old son is at school and the boy finds only an empty house

COPPERAS COVE, TX – A young Texas boy’s return home from school turned into a bewildering ordeal when he opened his front door to find the apartment abandoned—his mother and her boyfriend gone without a trace, their possessions packed up, and no word left behind.

The incident unfolded Friday afternoon when Copperas Cove police were called to an apartment complex after the child sought help from a neighbor. The neighbor told officers that the boy arrived visibly confused, showing them an apartment stripped bare of the family’s belongings. Authorities say the child recounted that his mother, Erica Renee Sanders, and her boyfriend, Keven Dwayne Adams, had previously mentioned the possibility of moving, but he had not been told of any firm plans or given instructions on where to go.

Officers launched an immediate inquiry, reaching out by phone to Sanders and Adams. According to police reports, the couple claimed that arrangements had been made for the boy’s uncle to pick him up. However, when investigators contacted the uncle, he denied any knowledge of such a plan, raising concerns about the intended welfare of the child.

Authorities further noted that when Adams spoke with them, he expressed considerable frustration with the boy. Police documents indicate that neither Sanders nor Adams provided a current address when later asked by child protective services, effectively concealing their whereabouts.

Neighbor accounts to investigators revealed that the boy’s home life had been unstable prior to this episode. The neighbor suggested to police that the child had previously been told to leave the residence by Sanders and Adams, describing a history of instability and rejection.

Both Sanders and Adams were taken into custody on charges of abandoning or endangering a child without intent to return. Child protective services have intervened to ensure the child’s immediate safety, while the investigation into his long-term welfare continues.

Copperas Cove police underscored the seriousness of the alleged abandonment, noting the potential risks posed to the child, who had been left without adult supervision or a clear path forward. The circumstances surrounding the family’s departure remain under review.

Authorities have not disclosed where the child is currently residing, but confirmed he is being cared for by responsible adults as the case moves through the legal system.

As of Saturday, officials had not released information regarding the bond status or continued detention of Sanders and Adams.

The case has drawn attention to the importance of reliable caregiving and the responsibilities parents and guardians bear to ensure children are never left in vulnerable situations. No injuries were reported as a result of the incident.
