Philadelphia — A Temple University student has been arrested following the tragic death of a fellow student in an incident that police are treating as homicide. The victim, identified as 20-year-old Milan Jones, also a student at Temple, was found deceased from blunt force trauma early Saturday morning.
The Philadelphia Police were summoned to a North Philadelphia residence on the 1000 block of Willington Street around 4 a.m. following reports of a medical emergency. Upon arrival, they discovered Jones’s body inside the home.
Milan Jones, a Philadelphia native, was a promising student enrolled in her third year of nursing studies at Temple University’s College of Public Health. The university expressed profound grief over the loss, emphasizing the significant impact of her passing on the community.
Authorities have charged 21-year-old Tymir Lackey, also a student at the university, with murder among other related charges. Lackey, who was apprehended at the scene, has been suspended from the university pending further investigation.
The police are currently investigating the case as a domestic incident. This classification suggests that the assailant and victim were known to each other, which adds another layer of complexity and tragedy to the event.
Temple University released a statement lamenting the untimely death of Jones, describing her as a young woman with a bright future ahead. “We are deeply saddened to inform you of the death of third-year nursing student Milan Jones,” the statement read. “Milan enjoyed helping and caring for others, a passion clearly reflected in her choice of career. She had a very bright future ahead of her, and the loss is immeasurable.”
Given the sensitive nature of the incident, Temple University has extended support services to its students and faculty. Counseling and psychological services are being provided to help the community cope with the tragic event. Additionally, the university’s wellness and employee assistance programs are actively providing support to those affected.
As the investigation continues, the university community reels from the shock, grappling with the complexity of addressing domestic violence within its student population. This stark incident brings to light the broader issues of domestic violence and the need for effective support and intervention systems.
The Temple community has rallied together, offering condolences and support to those close to Milan Jones. University officials have reiterated their commitment to fostering a safe and supportive environment for all students and staff.
The Temple University Police Department is assisting the Philadelphia Police Department with their ongoing investigation. Meanwhile, resources for individuals affected by domestic violence are being highlighted to ensure that students and staff know where to seek help, both on campus and through national hotlines.
