Superintendent Licata Announces Retirement Due to Health Reasons, Broward Schools Prepares for New Leadership

Fort Lauderdale, Florida – Broward County Superintendent Dr. Peter Licata surprised attendees at the Tuesday School Board meeting by announcing his retirement. Licata, who has served in the role since July of the previous year, cited personal reasons for his decision. He expressed gratitude for the support of the community and highlighted the district’s positive trajectory under his leadership.

Having spent nearly 30 years with the Palm Beach School District in various roles, including teacher, principal, and regional superintendent, Licata emphasized his student-centered, teacher-supported, and principal-led philosophy. He holds a BA in Business Administration and Political Science from the University of Miami, an MS in Educational Leadership from Barry University, and a Ph.D. in Global Leadership from Lynn University.

In a move that caught many off guard, Licata’s successor was immediately named as Howard Hepburn, the district’s chief academic officer. Hepburn, a close collaborator of Licata, underlined the importance of maintaining focus on student performance and achievement. The transition plans include negotiation of Licata’s exit package and the creation of a new three-year contract for Hepburn.

The School Board faces the task of ensuring a smooth transition and maintaining progress in Broward County schools. Licata’s departure marks the end of an era, as he leaves behind a legacy of community engagement and dedication to educational excellence. The incoming superintendent, Hepburn, aims to continue this mission by prioritizing student success and community involvement. As the district navigates this leadership change, stakeholders are hopeful for a seamless transition and continued commitment to educational advancement.

In the midst of this transition, the Board members are focused on shaping the future of Broward County schools, with an unwavering commitment to excellence and community collaboration. Licata’s retirement may signal the end of one chapter, but it also presents an opportunity for new leadership to build upon the foundation he established during his tenure. The community remains optimistic about the future of Broward County schools under the leadership of Superintendent Hepburn and looks forward to continued progress and success in the district.
