Los Angeles, CA – The first Supplemental Security Income payment of 2024, with a maximum amount of $943 for individual filers, has been distributed to recipients, marking the initial payment of the year due to a scheduling quirk in the Social Security Administration’s calendar.
Recipients of the SSI program received their first 2024 payment on Thursday, following two payments in December and none in January. The maximum amount varies depending on whether the recipient filed as an individual, jointly, or as an essential person providing care to someone receiving SSI payments.
Individual filers can receive up to $943 each month, eligible couples up to $1,415, and essential persons up to $472 each month, reflecting a 3.2% increase from 2023. However, not all recipients will receive the maximum payment, and personalized estimates can be obtained through the SSA’s calculator.
To qualify for SSI, a person must have limited income and be totally or partially blind, or have a physical or mental condition that seriously limits their daily activities for a period of 12 months or more.
Established in 1974, the SSI program aims to provide additional assistance to vulnerable individuals, including the elderly, blind, and those with debilitating disabilities. The payments supplement regular Social Security benefits, offering monthly support to adults and children with blindness or another disability and limited income.
The SSI program continues to be a critical lifeline for individuals and families facing economic and health challenges, offering essential financial support and assistance to some of the most vulnerable members of society.
