GARY, Ind. — A tragic case has unfolded in Gary, where authorities are investigating the death of a 71-year-old man found in a disturbing condition inside his home. The police have arrested a 19-year-old suspect, now facing charges of murder and auto theft.
The investigation started on April 12 when friends concerned about Darryl Miller’s well-being visited his residence in the 2200 block of Rhode Island Street. They discovered what appeared to be a body wrapped in blankets and immediately notified the authorities. Upon arrival, police confirmed that Miller was deceased, bound with duct tape and exhibiting signs of decomposition. Evidence at the scene suggested a violent confrontation had occurred prior to his death.
Officers quickly established that Miller’s Honda Accord was missing, which led them to a crucial lead. Later that day, the vehicle was spotted in Porter County, where a police officer attempted to pull it over. The driver, identified as Cameion Askia Brown, fled, sparking a high-speed chase that ultimately ended when officers deployed a PIT maneuver. Brown was arrested and later admitted he was aware he was driving a stolen car.
Witness statements indicate that Miller had allowed individuals in need to stay at his home, including Brown, whom he reportedly referred to as “Pops.” Friends confirmed that they had seen Brown with Miller at church days before the discovery of the body. Suspicion grew when they received messages purportedly from Brown, claiming Miller was unwell and unable to communicate.
In interviews with detectives, Brown alleged that the violence escalated after he claimed Miller had touched him inappropriately. According to the affidavit, Brown described a violent encounter, stating he struck Miller multiple times until he was incapacitated. However, his accounts fluctuated between claiming Miller was still breathing and admitting that he had caused Miller’s death. Autopsy results later confirmed that Miller died from multiple blunt force injuries, with defensive wounds evident on his body.
The investigation has attracted attention from several law enforcement agencies, including the Indiana State Police and the Gary Police Department. They have assured the community that this incident appears isolated, emphasizing there is no ongoing threat to public safety. Nevertheless, the horrific nature of the crime has left friends and family in shock as they grapple with the loss of someone they described as welcoming and kind.
As Brown’s case progresses, he faces serious legal repercussions. Under Indiana law, a murder conviction could result in a prison sentence of up to 65 years. Adding to his troubles, court records reveal that he had multiple pending criminal cases before this incident, including charges related to battery and resisting law enforcement.
The Lake County Prosecutor’s Homicide Task Force has taken an active role in the investigation, with further developments expected as the case moves through the legal system. Brown remains in custody while awaiting his next court appearance, as authorities continue to piece together the events surrounding Miller’s tragic death.
