PAXTON SUED OVER LGBTQ RECORD DEMANDS IN TRANS YOUTH CASE

Austin, Texas – A lawsuit has been filed against Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton after he demanded records from an LGBTQ group supporting families seeking transition-related medical care for transgender youths. The group, PFLAG, described Paxton’s demand as an overreach and retaliation for their involvement in lawsuits regarding minors’ access to gender-affirming care in Texas. The lawsuit aims to block Paxton’s demand, alleging violations of freedom of petition, speech, assembly, and protection against unjustified searches and seizures.

PFLAG CEO Brian K. Bond criticized Paxton’s demand as “petty and invasive,” stressing the importance of supporting LGBTQ communities. The ongoing legal battle between Paxton and PFLAG highlights the challenges faced by transgender youth and their families in accessing necessary medical care.

Paxton’s office issued a demand letter to PFLAG requesting records related to a lawsuit against a state law prohibiting gender-affirming medical care for minors. The demand letters seek information regarding alleged violations of the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices-Consumer Protection Act, focusing on claims of misrepresentation surrounding gender transitioning and Texas law.

The conflict between Paxton and PFLAG underscores the broader efforts by state officials to restrict access to transition-related care for minors in Texas. Paxton previously declared gender-affirming medical care as child abuse under existing state law, prompting investigations into families providing such care. PFLAG and other LGBTQ organizations have been actively involved in legal battles to protect their members from state interference.

Despite legal challenges and political controversy, LGBTQ advocates like PFLAG remain steadfast in their commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of transgender individuals in Texas and beyond. The ongoing legal disputes reflect a broader societal debate on LGBTQ rights and healthcare access, highlighting the importance of advocacy and support for marginalized communities.
