Orange County Man Convicted of Parents’ and Housekeeper’s Murders Faces Life Behind Bars as Trial Shifts to Sanity Determination

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. — A 34-year-old man faces a lifetime behind bars following his conviction for the violent murders of both his parents and their housekeeper nearly six years ago. Camden Burton Nicholson was found guilty on three counts of first-degree murder Wednesday, after a jury deliberated on the shocking details surrounding the brutal events of February 2019.

Nicholson’s parents had attempted an intervention at their home, aiming to confront their son about his addiction and mental health issues. They had informed him that they would sever ties if he did not seek help, a desperate measure to address his ongoing struggles. The confrontation escalated dramatically, culminating in a horrific outburst of violence.

On the morning of February 11, 2019, prosecutors claim Nicholson stabbed his father, Richard Nicholson, 64, multiple times, then attempted to conceal the crime by dragging the body into the bathroom and barricading the door to hide the bloodshed. Shortly thereafter, his mother, Kim Nicholson, 61, returned home and became a victim herself, as her son attacked her in the garage, using a statue to strike and further stabbing her.

The rampage did not stop there. The following day, when longtime family housekeeper Maria Morse, 57, arrived for work, Nicholson ambushed her in a brutal attack, ultimately hiding her body in a plastic bin in the kitchen pantry.

After committing the murders, Nicholson allegedly went on a shopping spree using his parents’ vehicle and stolen credit cards, purchasing cannabis and other items amounting to hundreds of dollars. Surveillance footage captured his reckless spending as he tried to evade suspicion.

Nicholson eventually made his way to a medical facility in Irvine, where he called the authorities, claiming he acted in self-defense. He alleged his parents had attempted to kill him, but when police arrived at their Newport Beach home, they were met with a gruesome scene that belied his account.

During the trial, testimony highlighted Nicholson’s dependency on his parents for financial support and their repeated efforts to guide him through rehabilitation for his substance abuse issues. Prosecutors argued that Nicholson harbored growing resentment toward his parents, which ultimately resulted in a violent outburst.

Following the jury’s verdict, the trial has transitioned into a sanity phase to assess Nicholson’s mental state during the murders. This aspect of the trial could significantly influence his fate, as a ruling of insanity may lead to treatment rather than incarceration.

Sentencing details have yet to be announced, but Nicholson remains in custody as legal proceedings move forward, leaving a community grappling with the aftermath of this tragic case.
