SHAWNEE, OK – The tranquility of rural Pottawatomie County was shattered when an 18-year-old woman survived a brutal stabbing outside her own home, allegedly at the hands of a former co-worker who authorities say had become fixated on her.
The attack unfolded around 1 a.m. as the woman returned to her house, according to the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office. With a burger in hand, she paused on her front porch—unaware that someone in a mask was stalking her from the shadows. In a sudden assault, the masked figure stabbed her repeatedly in the neck and wrist before she could escape or call for help.
Her screams pierced the night and alerted her mother and younger brother. Rushing to confront the attacker and defend his sister, her brother was stabbed as well, sustaining minor injuries. His intervention, authorities believe, likely scared off the assailant, who fled the scene in a vehicle before deputies arrived.
The young woman was hospitalized in critical but stable condition, miraculously surviving 14 stab wounds. Her brother’s quick action was credited by deputies with saving her life.
Investigators quickly gathered evidence at the scene, which led them to identify 24-year-old Ronaldo Zavala as the suspect. Authorities said Zavala and the victim previously worked together at a local movie theater, but the woman had lodged a complaint against him for what she described as obsessive behavior.
After the investigation, authorities determined that Zavala had allegedly been harassing her for some time, sending unsolicited food deliveries and unwanted gifts. Following her complaint, Zavala lost his job—a move that authorities believe escalated his actions.
On the night of the assault, investigators allege Zavala hid near the woman’s house and waited for her to return home before carrying out the attack. They say the evidence collected at the scene, along with background information from the victim and family, led to his swift arrest.
Zavala faces multiple felony charges, including aggravated assault and battery, assault and battery with a deadly weapon, and domestic assault and battery while disguised or masked. He remains in custody at the Pottawatomie County Jail as the investigation continues.
Authorities are reminding community members to remain vigilant and report suspicious behavior, especially if someone appears to be targeting or following them. They also credit the victim’s family for their quick response, which may have prevented further harm.
While the young woman is expected to recover, the incident has left the rural community shaken and raised concerns about personal safety and stalking. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack.
