North Carolina Man Charged with Assaulting Healthcare Workers by Intentionally Spraying HIV-Positive Blood

RALEIGH, N.C. — A 25-year-old man faces serious charges after allegedly attacking two healthcare workers by spraying them with his HIV-positive blood at a hospital earlier this year.

Kameron Gilchrist was receiving treatment for complications related to diabetes at UNC Rex Hospital when he reportedly removed an intravenous line and intentionally directed his blood into the eyes of a male and female staff member. This incident occurred in March and has raised significant concerns about safety in healthcare settings.

Both healthcare workers suffered irritation and may have been exposed to HIV, although officials have not disclosed whether either has tested positive for the virus following the incident. According to the arrest warrant, Gilchrist’s actions were described as a deliberate assault on emergency personnel, reflecting the serious nature of the charges against him.

Initially, law enforcement did not apprehend Gilchrist immediately after the incident, as he was undergoing medical and psychiatric care. He was arrested in September and is currently being held at the Wake County Detention Center, with a bond set at $25,000.

As news of the incident emerged, UNC Rex Hospital officials reiterated their commitment to ensuring staff safety, particularly given the increasing reports of violence against healthcare employees. Although specifics regarding the investigation of Gilchrist’s case were not disclosed, hospital representatives mentioned that they have implemented enhanced security measures to protect their workers.

This case underscores the challenges healthcare professionals face while attending to patients and highlights the urgent need for hospitals to prioritize both employee and patient safety. The incident has sparked discussions about potential legislation aimed at protecting healthcare workers from similar assaults.

Authorities have not released additional information regarding the ongoing investigation, and attempts to gather further details from law enforcement have been unsuccessful.

Gilchrist is set to appear in court on December 8 to address the felony assault charges. The outcome of the legal proceedings will determine the subsequent steps in this serious and troubling case.
