Mother Charged with Fraud After Allegedly Faking Daughter’s Medical Needs for $97,000 in Aid

MARION, Ind. — A local mother faces serious charges after allegedly exploiting her daughter’s medical needs to fraudulently secure nearly $97,000 in assistance. Alanna Lin Brown, 32, is accused of manipulating the healthcare system, leading to charges of fraud and child neglect stemming from her attempts to obtain financial support through deceptive means.

In April, Brown brought her 3-year-old daughter to the emergency room, claiming the child had significant difficulties eating and required a feeding tube. Medical professionals subsequently diagnosed the girl with moderate malnutrition, prompting both medical treatment and referral to a charitable organization designed to provide support to families in need.

Concerns began to emerge when the child’s father, an employee in early childhood education, questioned whether the girl genuinely experienced eating difficulties. Investigators have reported that Brown allegedly limited the father’s access to the child’s medical appointments and pushed for the feeding tube installation, despite evidence suggesting that the girl could consume food normally.

Interviews with acquaintances revealed skepticism regarding the reported medical issues. One friend recounted a recent outing where she observed the girl eating without any apparent difficulty, undermining Brown’s claims of her child’s condition.

Over nearly two years, Brown is reported to have received almost $97,000 from a local nonprofit intended to assist individuals with medical needs. Authorities gathered evidence through witness statements and financial documents which indicated that Brown misrepresented her daughter’s health status to obtain the funds.

Video evidence reportedly shows Brown expressing frustration about her financial situation and concern about potential lost payments if her daughter returned to eating solid foods. In these recordings, she lamented the troubling prospect of losing financial assistance tied to the feeding tube.

The child’s father informed investigators that during a recent 10-day visit while the girl was in his care, she did not require the feeding tube and displayed noticeable health improvements, including weight gain. This account was corroborated by the child’s healthcare provider, who noted that the girl lost weight while in Brown’s care but thrived once removed from that environment.

Brown has since been arrested and charged with fraud and child neglect, causing bodily injury. She was booked into the Grant County Jail but was released after posting a $2,000 bond.

As the legal proceedings unfold, Brown is expected to appear in court on December 5. Authorities continue to prioritize the health and safety of the child, who is now reportedly on the path to recovery. The case has sparked significant concern within the community about the welfare of vulnerable children and the systems in place to protect them.
