Missouri Man Sentenced to Nearly 16 Years for Armed Kidnapping of Pregnant Girlfriend in Disturbing Cross-State Assault

FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS, Ill. – A 42-year-old man from Missouri was sentenced to nearly 16 years in federal prison for his role in the kidnapping of his pregnant girlfriend, an incident marked by threats and violence that shocked authorities.

Kevin Smith’s sentencing this week stems from a December 2022 event that began when he forced the woman into a vehicle at gunpoint in St. Charles, Missouri, and ended at a Planned Parenthood clinic across state lines. Following his guilty plea to kidnapping charges, federal prosecutors outlined the harrowing events that unfolded over several hours.

Court documents reveal that the couple’s conflict ignited after the victim disclosed her pregnancy via a positive test result. After discussing the possibility of abortion, she opted to carry the child to term, which prompted Smith to threaten her both in person and through numerous aggressive messages. The situation escalated dangerously when Smith confronted the woman at her workplace, a gas station, early on December 8.

According to investigators, Smith forced the victim into his car, where he brandished a firearm and drove more than 35 miles toward the clinic. Throughout the journey, he reportedly made chilling threats about her safety, creating a terrifying atmosphere for the victim.

In a moment of bravery, the woman managed to send a stealthy text to her family, indicating she was in peril. Her quick thinking enabled them to alert law enforcement, who tracked Smith’s vehicle to the Planned Parenthood parking lot where the climax of the situation occurred.

When police arrived, Smith attempted to escape but was apprehended without causing harm to the victim. He discarded a loaded Glock 27 handgun out of the car window before being taken into custody.

Evidence collected during the investigation included body camera footage of Smith, in which he expressed that his intent was to prevent the birth of another child for personal reasons. Initially charged with a range of offenses including aggravated kidnapping and unlawful possession of a firearm, the nature of Smith’s actions was deemed premeditated by both prosecutors and the judge overseeing the case.

Highlighting his previous history of domestic abuse, the judge described the incident as calculated and deeply traumatic for the victim. Smith’s behavior did not cease upon his arrest; prosecutors revealed that he continued to harass and threaten the woman even while incarcerated.

Smith’s sentence not only serves to hold him accountable but also underscores the broader issue of domestic violence, especially as it relates to reproductive rights. Federal authorities noted that the severity and viciousness of this case presented challenges even for seasoned investigators, highlighting a troubling disregard for the victim’s autonomy.

The survivor of this ordeal, who managed to escape unharmed, played a crucial role in the investigation and legal proceedings. Smith will be transported to a federal correctional facility to serve his time, which includes a three-year supervised release following his prison term. The case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by victims of domestic violence, particularly regarding control over reproductive health decisions.
