FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS, Ill. – A 42-year-old man from Missouri was sentenced to nearly 16 years in federal prison for his role in the kidnapping of his pregnant girlfriend, an incident marked by threats and violence that shocked authorities.
Kevin Smith’s sentencing this week stems from a December 2022 event that began when he forced the woman into a vehicle at gunpoint in St. Charles, Missouri, and ended at a Planned Parenthood clinic across state lines. Following his guilty plea to kidnapping charges, federal prosecutors outlined the harrowing events that unfolded over several hours.
Court documents reveal that the couple’s conflict ignited after the victim disclosed her pregnancy via a positive test result. After discussing the possibility of abortion, she opted to carry the child to term, which prompted Smith to threaten her both in person and through numerous aggressive messages. The situation escalated dangerously when Smith confronted the woman at her workplace, a gas station, early on December 8.
