Milwaukee Man Armed with Ten Guns and Barricaded in Family Home Sparks 14-Hour Standoff with Police

MILWAUKEE, Wis. — A 33-year-old man faces multiple criminal charges following a tense, 14-hour standoff with law enforcement that erupted from a family dispute. Vance Lee is charged with 16 offenses, including making threats against his parents, which ultimately escalated into a dangerous confrontation on March 28.

The situation unfolded at Lee’s parents’ home, located near 68th Street and West Brentwood Avenue. As tensions escalated, Lee reportedly brandished firearms and threatened the lives of his family members. According to court documents, he had a handgun and a rifle on him during the altercation and allegedly told his brother over the phone, “We are all dying today.” Fearing for their safety, his parents sought refuge in their bedroom.

Police arrived at the residence around 8:44 a.m. on March 28 after receiving reports of the situation. Officers attempted to persuade Lee to leave the home, but he refused and barricaded himself inside. As the standoff continued, SWAT teams, crisis negotiators, and armored vehicles were deployed to the scene. In a dramatic turn, Lee fired a shotgun from an upstairs window, damaging a police drone that had been sent into the house. Fortunately, no injuries were reported during these events.

Negotiations dragged on for several hours, and officers ultimately used gas to coax Lee out of the house. He surrendered to police around 10:19 p.m. that evening. Once inside the residence, authorities discovered an extensive cache of weapons, including one shotgun, four rifles, five handguns, along with body armor, numerous magazines, and hundreds of rounds of ammunition. Lee reportedly told investigators he had been consuming alcohol and methamphetamine prior to the standoff.

Investigators further revealed that Lee’s criminal history includes a felony burglary conviction in California, which legally prohibits him from possessing firearms. This aspect of the case is significant given the charges of firearm possession by a felon. Prosecutors highlighted that the weapons recovered correlate with both the threats made to Lee’s parents and the destruction of police property.

Lee’s family expressed their love for him but indicated they could no longer endure his threats. They described the atmosphere during the police encounter as tense and fearful. The initial argument that precipitated the standoff reportedly stemmed from accusations of theft within the household, though specific details on how the situation escalated to such an armed confrontation remain unclear.

On April 2, a judge set Lee’s bond at $50,000, prohibiting him from possessing firearms or any dangerous weapons, and ordered him to undergo drug testing. His next court appearance was scheduled for April 7 as part of the preliminary hearing process. If convicted on all counts, he faces a potential sentence exceeding 140 years in prison, along with substantial fines.
