MOUNT CLEMENS, MI — A Michigan court has handed down a severe sentence to Sierra Pearl Zaitona, 29, for her role in the starvation death of her 2-year-old son. Zaitona will face 24 to 50 years for second-degree murder alongside a concurrent sentence of up to 10 years for second-degree child abuse.

Both Zaitona and the child’s father, Jonathon Matthew Cheek, 26, were subsequently accused of deliberately withholding food, which prosecutors contended led to the boy’s death.
