MIAMI, FLORIDA – A Miami pastor is facing federal criminal charges after authorities discovered he had been collecting a deceased person’s Social Security benefits for over ten years. Michael Gene Bryant, 57, who leads Greater Sweetfield Missionary Baptist Church in Coconut Grove, is accused of theft of government funds and making false statements.
According to a federal indictment, Bryant became the representative payee for an individual identified as “H. L. G.” back in 1996. Despite the beneficiary passing away in 2012, Bryant allegedly continued to collect payments until January of this year. Prosecutors claim that he deceived the government by falsifying documents and claiming that the beneficiary still resided with him.
