MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – A 24-year-old man is facing a serious legal challenge after allegedly slashing another man’s throat during a confrontation over a cigarette and a cellphone. The incident unfolded on the evening of October 23 on the crowded Collins Avenue, a popular area for both visitors and locals.
Jack Daniel Gutierrez reportedly approached the victim near a lifeguard stand, asking for a cigarette. When the man declined, Gutierrez then requested to borrow his cellphone, but that request was also turned down. After what seemed to be a concluded interaction, Gutierrez returned and, without warning, attacked the man with a knife or a similar weapon, inflicting a deep cut across the victim’s neck.
The brutal assault left the victim with a severe wound that extended from ear to ear, leading to substantial blood loss. Remarkably, despite his injuries, the man managed to use his phone’s voice assistant to call for help. First responders arrived quickly and transported him to a local hospital, where his condition remains undisclosed; however, quick medical intervention was critical for his survival.
Authorities began a manhunt for Gutierrez, who fled the scene immediately after the attack. Law enforcement found him several blocks away just a few days later. Following the apprehension, the victim was able to identify Gutierrez from a photo lineup, which has now led to an aggravated battery charge against him for allegedly inflicting great bodily harm with a weapon.
Gutierrez is currently being held without bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. Records indicate that he was on probation for a prior weapons offense at the time of this incident, adding another layer of complexity to his case.
Residents and visitors of Miami Beach have expressed heightened concerns for their safety following this episode of violence in an area known for its vibrant atmosphere. In response, local law enforcement has stepped up patrols to alleviate these concerns and maintain public safety.
As authorities continue to investigate the incident, Gutierrez is scheduled for a court appearance on Monday. It remains unclear whether additional charges will be filed as the legal proceedings unfold.
