Man beaten to death outside Pennsylvania bar by trained boxer who was dating his niece

ALTOONA, PA – Darkness had settled over the heart of Altoona when a night at a local tavern took a deadly turn, shattering the peace usually found on its quiet streets.

The early hours of Sunday saw a gathering at the Kettle Inn descend into chaos after tempers flared and a dispute spiraled beyond control. According to investigators, Corey Lopez, 34, became embroiled in the violence that erupted outside the bar, ultimately leading to the death of his girlfriend’s uncle, James Dunn, 41.

Police reports state the altercation began around 1 a.m., when Lopez arrived at the bar with his girlfriend. The evening took a volatile twist when a scuffle broke out between the woman and Dunn’s wife. Witnesses say that in the blink of an eye, the family quarrel spilled into the open, drawing in bystanders desperate to break it up.

As the confrontation raged, Dunn and another patron attempted to intervene, trying to restrain the fighting women. Instead of calming, the scene quickly escalated. Lopez is accused of stepping in, intent on fighting, despite others pleading for calm. The situation grew even more tense when Dunn, in an apparent effort to restore order, brandished a firearm and fired a warning shot into the air, a move witnesses say did little to defuse Lopez’s aggression.

According to statements provided to investigators, Lopez allegedly responded with a challenge, confronting Dunn in the middle of the fray. Moments later, Lopez threw a punch that struck Dunn with such force that the older man collapsed to the street, motionless.

Video evidence gathered from nearby surveillance cameras, along with witness accounts, indicate Lopez did not stop there. Police say after Dunn was on the ground and unresponsive, Lopez delivered a kick before stepping away from the unconscious man.

When officers arrived, the chaotic scene was still unfolding. Lopez was found sitting across the street in a deli parking lot, nursing cuts and a bandaged hand. Dunn lay motionless nearby. Emergency responders rushed Dunn to the hospital, but he was later pronounced dead.

As police attempted to take Lopez into custody, he allegedly resisted, pushing an officer before being subdued. Authorities booked Lopez on charges of criminal homicide, aggravated assault, and several other offenses.

During questioning, Lopez reportedly told law enforcement he had been drinking heavily that night and claimed he could not recall striking Dunn. He insisted his actions were an attempt to protect himself and his girlfriend as the tension soared.

The violent episode leaves a void in a small city where neighbors say disputes rarely reach such extremes. Family members and friends now face the aftermath of a tragedy fueled by alcohol and unchecked tempers, just 95 miles east of Pittsburgh. The investigation continues as authorities seek to piece together the chain of choices that led one night at a neighborhood bar to end in irreversible loss.
