Man Arrested After Early Morning Blast and Gunfire Shock Cornelius Neighborhood

CORNELIUS, Ore. — Residents were startled from their slumber early on the morning of Oct. 6, when a powerful explosion rocked an apartment building on North 10th Street. Authorities arrested a local man, Samuel Christian Lund, 37, in connection with the incident, which police believe was fueled by personal disputes related to a former relationship.

Lund faces multiple serious charges, including five counts of attempted murder, four counts of unlawful use of a weapon, and charges related to the illegal manufacture of a destructive device. Additionally, he has been charged with first-degree arson and possession of a firearm as a felon.

The chaos erupted around 4 a.m. when one resident opened his door to find a man in black clothing outside. Startled, the resident quickly closed the door, but moments later, he heard metallic noises followed by a massive explosion that sent debris flying through the air. Gunfire was also reported, with shots fired into the apartment door shortly after the blast.

Miraculously, no injuries were reported among the residents or neighbors, thanks in part to the swift actions of local individuals. Witnesses reported seeing a person speeding away on an electric bicycle shortly after the explosion, an observation that proved crucial for investigators.

As detectives delved into the case, they uncovered that Lund had sent a barrage of harassing and threatening texts to his ex-girlfriend the previous day. These messages escalated after she began dating someone else. The woman described Lund’s threats and expressed fears for her safety, prompting police intervention.

Moreover, the ex-girlfriend confirmed Lund owned an electric bike that matched witness descriptions, strengthening the case against him. When confronted by law enforcement, Lund admitted to sending the threatening messages but denied knowledge of the explosion. However, he acknowledged his familiarity with explosives and revealed there was a bomb inside a backpack located in his garage.

After his arrest, Lund was taken to the Washington County Jail, where he is being held without bail. His next court appearance is set for Nov. 17. Court documents reveal that Lund has a violent history, including a five-year prison sentence for stabbing a man outside a grocery store in 2018.

Authorities continue to gather evidence in the ongoing investigation while maintaining the seriousness of the charges against Lund. Local officials have assured the community that there are no additional threats currently, underscoring the importance of the prompt response by residents that helped avert potential harm.
