BATON ROUGE, LA – A Louisiana man, Brynnen Murphy, 23, may spend the rest of his life in prison after admitting to murdering his pregnant girlfriend and her toddler. Murphy pleaded guilty to two counts of manslaughter and one count of first-degree feticide, effectively sidestepping the initial charges of first-degree murder.
These charges stem from the 2022 deaths of 24-year-old Kaylen Johnson and her 2-year-old son, Kaden Johnson. Initially, Murphy faced two counts of first-degree murder, which were later downgraded to second-degree murder by a grand jury. His trial was on the verge of commencing, but he opted for a plea deal with the East Baton Rouge District Attorney’s Office.
In the plea agreement, Murphy agreed to a 95-year prison term, a sentence that equates to life without parole. Authorities detailed that the plea deal aimed to protect the victims’ family from the anguish of a trial, which would have presented them with distressing evidence.
“The trial would have forced the family to relive the horrific details of the crime, a burden we wanted to spare them,” explained District Attorney Hilla Moore outside the courtroom. “This plea ensures justice is served and secures a life sentence without the uncertainty of a trial outcome.”
Kaylen Johnson, who was pregnant with Murphy’s child, and her son were last seen on March 5, 2022. When they failed to make contact with family for several days, they were reported missing. A subsequent wellness check by police revealed that her cellphone was disconnected, raising further concern.
As the search continued, Johnson’s car turned up abandoned without license plates, prompting suspicion. Murphy initially dodged police inquiries but ultimately surrendered. He then provided a chilling confession to the authorities.
According to the confession, the fatal event began after an argument in the car. Murphy admitted to shooting Johnson twice in the head while Kaden remained in his car seat. He disposed of Johnson’s body in a roadside ditch before driving with Kaden to a bridge over Central Thruway, where he threw the child over the edge.
Assistant District Attorney Jaclyn Christie Chapman recounted during the plea hearing how the fall itself did not harm Kaden. Instead, the child tragically succumbed to starvation and exposure after being left alone, a grim detail that underscores the devastating nature of the crimes.
Investigators believe Johnson and her son had been deceased for approximately a week before being discovered. The plea agreement concluded with a belief that it delivered justice while sparing the victims’ family additional heartache.
