ROSEVILLE, Mich. — A 22-year-old man is facing the possibility of spending the rest of his life in prison after being found guilty of murder and sexual assault involving a 64-year-old woman in her home. A Macomb County jury returned a verdict on Tuesday against Stephen Lee Freeman, who was charged in connection with the violent death of Gabriele Seitz in October 2022.
The case captured widespread attention due to the horrific nature of the crime and the circumstances surrounding Seitz’s tragic fate. Authorities reported that Freeman unlawfully entered Seitz’s Roseville residence by climbing through a bathroom window with an intent to commit a violent act.
Prosecutors outlined a grim timeline of events, stating that Freeman awaited Seitz’s return home, ambushed her, and then brutally assaulted her before strangling her to death with a shoelace. The attack, which was described as methodical and vicious, left the community in shock.
After the crime, Freeman allegedly attempted to conceal his actions by placing Seitz’s body inside a duffel bag. Surveillance footage captured him leaving the scene in her pickup truck shortly after the murder, further implicating him in the crime.
Law enforcement soon located the stolen vehicle, where Seitz’s remains were found hidden under a blanket in the bed of the truck. A responding officer recalled the harrowing moment of discovering the victim’s body, underscoring the horrific nature of the case.
Subsequent investigations tied Freeman to the crime through a combination of cellphone video evidence and DNA collected from the scene along with the victim. This forensic evidence was paramount in leading to the jury’s decision.
Following a two-week trial, the jury unanimously convicted Freeman on various charges, including first-degree murder, home invasion, and multiple counts related to the concealment of the crime. This verdict marks the conclusion of a notably high-profile prosecution, one that officials hope will aid Seitz’s family and the community in their healing process.
Freeman is set to appear in Macomb County Circuit Court for sentencing in October. While he faces a mandatory life sentence, updates to state laws indicate that offenders aged 19 or 20 at the time of their crime may have some possibility of parole. However, the gravity of the charges remains likely to hinder any chance of release.
Officials expressed relief that justice has been served, yet acknowledged the deep emotional wounds that linger among Seitz’s loved ones and the broader community. This case highlights the crucial role of forensic science in modern criminal investigations and the diligence of law enforcement in pursuing justice for victims.
