Idaho man says he killed grandpa with hatchet so he could end his suffering

SAGLE, ID – A northern Idaho community is grappling with the fallout after a man allegedly killed his grandfather, telling authorities he did so to end the older man’s difficulties.

Authorities say Jeremiah Kiley, 29, called 911 to report an incident at the rural home he shared with his grandfather, Joseph Reyes, 69. When sheriff’s deputies arrived at the residence on Tuesday, they discovered Reyes dead from what investigators describe as a violent attack.

According to law enforcement, Kiley claimed his grandfather exhibited erratic behavior the previous evening, with Kiley alleging Reyes threatened him with a firearm and was struggling with mental health issues. Investigators noted that Kiley mentioned fearing Reyes could access more hidden weapons inside the house, amplifying the sense of crisis between the two family members.

Court documents indicate that during interviews with detectives, Kiley offered conflicting reasons for the deadly encounter. While initially stating he acted in self-defense, he later told authorities he used a hatchet to hit his grandfather’s head in an attempt to cease what he described as Reyes’ agony.

Sheriff’s officials have not elaborated on the specifics of Reyes’ reported suffering or the events leading up to the confrontation. Questions also remain about the length of time between the incident itself and the moment Kiley contacted emergency services.

Throughout the police interviews, Kiley’s mood reportedly shifted dramatically, at times remaining composed and at others displaying heightened agitation. Despite these swings in demeanor, deputies arrested Kiley without resistance.

Kiley faces charges of second-degree murder and is currently being held at the Bonner County Jail with bond set at $1 million pending further legal proceedings. According to records, he is due in court later this month.

Detectives emphasized that the circumstances of the case point to an isolated event with no threat to others in the community. The investigation continues as officials piece together details from the crime scene and witness statements.

As the judicial process begins, residents in the quiet Sagle area are left stunned by the gravity of the incident. The Bonner County Sheriff’s Office has yet to release further information about what may have triggered the fatal altercation or whether previous disputes had occurred between the two men.

Kiley remains in custody as authorities work to determine the full scope of what happened inside the grandfather’s home.
