High Court Doubles Kim Keon Hee’s Sentence Amid Corruption Scandal, Appellate Judge Found Dead

Seoul, South Korea — Kim Keon Hee, the wife of impeached former President Yoon Suk Yeol, has been sentenced to four years in prison following a ruling by the Seoul High Court, which significantly increased her penalty for corruption. The court’s decision on April 28, 2026, overturned a prior acquittal on charges related to stock manipulation, raising her original sentence from 20 months. In addition to her prison term, the court imposed a fine of 50 million won and ordered the confiscation of a luxury diamond necklace.

The appellate judges determined that Kim was complicit in the manipulation of stock prices for Deutsch Motors, collaborating with a network of traders. They highlighted her awareness that the Unification Church, which had provided gifts amounting to approximately 80 million won between April and July 2022, was seeking political favors in return for its contributions.

In a televised announcement, a lead judge remarked that Kim’s actions diminished public trust in governmental transparency and contributed to polarization in public sentiment regarding national issues. The ruling reflects a shift in the judiciary’s approach to corruption, particularly in light of high-profile political scandals.

Tragedy struck the case this week when Shin Jong-o, the presiding judge in Kim’s trial, was found unresponsive at the courthouse. He was subsequently pronounced dead at a hospital. Investigators reported no signs of foul play surrounding his death, although local media speculated about a potential note left behind. Shin’s family has requested privacy during this difficult time.

The appellate court’s ruling marked a drastic increase in Kim’s punishment, which stemmed from a January verdict where she received a lesser sentence for accepting luxury items from the Unification Church. While that ruling cleared her of more serious charges related to stock price manipulation, prosecutors sought a tougher penalty and subsequently filed an appeal.

Kim’s legal team intends to challenge the appellate court’s decision in South Korea’s Supreme Court. Though she was acquitted of several election law violations, the court upheld findings that she illegally supported a political candidate during a by-election in 2022.

Kim and her husband, Yoon, have made history as the first former presidential couple in South Korea to face simultaneous convictions. Yoon has also been embroiled in legal troubles, initially receiving a five-year sentence for abusing power and facing multiple trials, including charges related to insurrection. He was removed from office in April 2025 and has since appealed his convictions.

A small group of supporters gathered outside the High Court following the ruling, displaying banners proclaiming slogans associated with Yoon, echoing sentiments reminiscent of political rhetoric from overseas.

Kim’s rapid fall from grace has been dramatic. Arrested in August 2025, she publicly apologized during hearings, expressing regret over the embarrassment caused to the public. Her scandals have undermined her husband’s political standing and contributed to electoral setbacks for his administration.

In recent years, scrutiny of Kim intensified with revelations about her acceptance of luxury items and alleged ties to the Unification Church, which resulted in other legal consequences for its leadership. The ongoing investigations into her activities have solidified a narrative of political corruption that continues to unfold in South Korea’s complex political landscape.
