Guild Awards Honor Excellence in Writing Across Media Platforms

New York City, New York – The 2024 Writers Guild Awards is currently underway, with ceremonies happening simultaneously in New York and Los Angeles. The distinguished event recognizes outstanding achievements in writing across various categories in the entertainment industry.

At the Los Angeles ceremony, the first award presented was for best adapted screenplay, which was awarded to the Oscars’ adapted screenplay winner, “American Fiction.” Additionally, “The Last of Us” secured the award for best writing for a new series, while “Beef” emerged victorious in the best limited series writing category.

Niecy Nash-Betts is hosting the L.A. ceremony, while Josh Gondelman is leading the festivities in New York. This year, the Writers Guild Awards ceremonies have a special significance, coming more than a month after the 2024 Oscars and following a lengthy writers’ strike in 2023.

The union reached a new three-year deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers in September, addressing crucial issues such as protections against the use of AI, data transparency, and residuals tied to streaming success. The agreement also guarantees the minimum size of writers’ rooms.

In New York, the WGA East’s Richard B. Jablow Award was presented to the members and leadership of IATSE, International Brotherhood of Teamsters, SAG-AFTRA, and American Federation of Musicians for their unwavering support and sacrifice during the 148-day writers’ strike in 2023.

During the L.A. ceremony, Cord Jefferson, the adapted screenplay winner for “American Fiction” at the 2024 Oscars, received the Paul Selvin Award. Esteemed figures like Linda Bloodworth Thomason, Walter Hill, and the 2023 WGA negotiating committee co-chairs were also honored for their contributions to the industry. The event celebrates the resilience and solidarity of writers amidst challenges in the entertainment landscape.
