ROCKVILLE, MD – A man from Maryland has been taken into custody after allegedly confessing to the murder of his grandmother, an act he claims was premeditated. Spencer Dillon Hamilton, 27, approached authorities at the Rockville City Police Station Sunday evening, reportedly admitting to the violent crime involving his 87-year-old grandmother, Pauline Yvonne Titus-Dillon.
Police officials said they found Titus-Dillon deceased at her residence upon responding to Hamilton’s chilling admission. Court documents revealed that Hamilton described waiting in ambush in his grandmother’s bedroom on the morning of March 30.
He alleged that he attacked her shortly after she returned from the bathroom, using a knife, fists, and other means to carry out the assault.
Hamilton is claimed to have told police that following the brutal episode, he attempted to move the victim’s body and clean up the crime scene. He also allegedly took her personal items, including her phone, credit cards, and a laptop, before leaving her house, court records show.
The suspect has been charged with first-degree murder and is currently held without bail, reflecting the severity of the accusation. Detailed motives behind the alleged murder remain unclear, as investigators have not divulged any additional reasons for the attack.
At his initial court hearing on Monday, Hamilton expressed a desire to represent himself legally. This prompted the presiding judge to consult with a public defender, who recommended a psychiatric assessment for Hamilton. The evaluation comes amid concerns over his mental fitness to manage his defense.
The unusual nature of the case, marked by Hamilton’s alleged open admission and request for self-representation, emphasizes the complexities involved in prosecuting such crimes. Hamilton is scheduled to appear in court again on April 7, when more procedural decisions are likely to unfold.
The tragic murder of Pauline Titus-Dillon has left the local community in shock as family, friends, and neighbors grapple with the grim news. The specific reasons allegedly driving Hamilton to commit such an act remain under investigation as authorities continue to piece together the circumstances leading up to the event.
