Georgia man walking his dogs is shot when his dog fights another man’s dog

GAINESVILLE, GA – A peaceful Sunday stroll in a popular local park turned deadly when a disagreement between two dog owners erupted into violence, leaving one man and his dog fatally shot, authorities said.

The incident unfolded around 3:30 p.m. at Simpson Park, a regular destination for Terry Loden, 70, and his wife, Cheryle. The couple, married for half a century, had brought their dogs for their weekly walk, unaware the outing would end in tragedy.

According to investigators, the situation escalated rapidly when Loden’s dog and another dog, walked by Todd Stalcup, 52, became entangled in a fight on the park’s path. The two men, strangers until that afternoon, attempted to separate the animals. What began as a routine dog encounter quickly spiraled out of control.

Witnesses report that Loden was trying to pull his dog, Jesse, away when Stalcup drew a handgun and fired, striking the animal first. The scene then took a turn for the worse as Terry Loden protested the shooting, only to be shot himself. Loden was struck in the side and collapsed as his wife watched in horror.

Authorities say Cheryle Loden immediately called emergency services as her husband lay wounded. Despite her pleas and the arrival of first responders, Terry Loden succumbed to his injuries while being transported to the hospital.

After the shooting, Stalcup was seen pacing near the scene before getting into his vehicle and leaving the park. Hall County deputies located and apprehended Stalcup approximately 15 minutes later as he exited the area.

Stalcup, a Gainesville resident, was booked on multiple charges, including malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. He is currently being held without bond at the Hall County Detention Center.

The loss of Terry Loden has left a significant void in the tight-knit community, especially for his wife. Friends and family describe him as a generous and compassionate individual, always willing to lend a hand and share kindness with others.

Park-goers expressed shock at the violence that interrupted the usually tranquil setting, noting that Simpson Park is a beloved gathering spot for local families and pet owners.

The investigation remains ongoing as Hall County authorities continue to piece together the moments leading up to the fatal confrontation. No additional injuries were reported in the incident.
