MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – A 50-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of his ex-girlfriend, just minutes after she alleged online that he was stalking her. David Eugene Wright is facing serious charges, including second-degree murder with intent and possession of a firearm by a felon, following the death of 34-year-old Mariah Rosanna Samuels.
The violent incident occurred early Sunday morning in the 1400 block of Russell Avenue North. Emergency responders found Samuels unresponsive near her Jeep Compass, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite immediate attempts to save her, she was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after 8 a.m.
Samuels had taken to social media at around 7:45 a.m., publicly naming Wright and expressing her frustration over what she perceived as a lackluster response from law enforcement to her complaints about his behavior. Authorities confirmed that she had previously sought a protective order against him, citing harassment and threats that followed the end of their relationship in late August.
Surveillance footage from the area shows a man resembling Wright at the scene during the time of the shooting. Witnesses reported hearing gunfire followed by cries for help. One individual claimed to have seen a man hovering over Samuels’s body, appearing to rummage through her vehicle before fleeing the scene with a firearm.
Investigators have established a timeline linking Samuels’s online post to the shooting, raising concerns over the effectiveness of protective measures for victims of domestic violence. It has been revealed that Wright had confronted Samuels previously, brandishing a weapon and issuing threats that escalated in severity.
Wright was taken into custody later that day. During police questioning, he reportedly acknowledged his involvement and did not contest the charges, indicating the strength of the evidence against him.
Currently held without bail at the Hennepin County Jail, Wright is scheduled to make his first court appearance on Wednesday afternoon. The community is grappling with the tragic loss, focusing on the implications of Samuels’s case and the broader issue of domestic violence.
Authorities revealed that their investigation is ongoing, as they sift through evidence and seek additional witness accounts. Prosecutors are expected to provide more context on the case during the upcoming court hearing, which has attracted significant public interest due to its alarming circumstances.
