Florida Woman Arrested for Allegedly Inflicting Brutal Abuse on 8-Year-Old Stepdaughter, Leaving Her Hospitalized

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. — An 8-year-old girl sustained severe injuries allegedly inflicted by her stepmother, leading to a criminal investigation and the arrest of a Broward County woman. Authorities became aware of the girl’s circumstances when she arrived at school with visible bruises and described a series of abusive encounters.

Melirose Joncky, 42, has been charged with aggravated child abuse and neglect causing great bodily harm after a school counselor reported the girl’s injuries to the Broward Sheriff’s Office on April 9. Medical evaluations revealed that the child’s injuries extended far beyond isolated incidents, prompting law enforcement to act swiftly.

At the elementary school, staff observed the girl exhibiting numerous injuries, including black eyes, a forehead contusion, and wounds on her arms and neck. Additionally, she wore a cast on her arm, which she indicated was a result of ongoing abuse. Following the report, deputies interviewed the girl, provided medical assistance, and took Joncky into custody on the same day.

During questioning, the girl recounted an alleged incident from the day before her disclosure, claiming Joncky had pushed her down and jumped on her back, inflicting severe pain. She also stated that Joncky had choked her and struck her with various objects, including kitchen utensils. Medical professionals later confirmed that she had sustained fractured ribs and numerous marks consistent with physical abuse.

In her account, the girl depicted a pattern of punishment involving food, alleging that Joncky forced her to consume hot sauce and salt. Furthermore, the report indicated that Joncky had poured hot sauce on the girl’s injuries, compounding her distress. The gravity of the allegations prompted a judge at Joncky’s initial court appearance to express alarm over the details presented, stating they raised serious concerns about the child’s safety.

Joncky, who attended court with a translator fluent in Haitian Creole, faced a tough legal battle as prosecutors sought to keep her incarcerated, citing the risk she posed to the child. While her defense attorney requested release to fight the charges from outside jail, the judge denied this plea, acknowledging the severity of the alleged offenses.

After being advised of her rights, Joncky provided a different narrative to investigators, claiming the girl’s injuries resulted from accidental incidents rather than abuse. Despite her assertions, authorities noted inconsistencies and the prosecutor emphasized that Joncky was aware of the injuries when she dropped the girl off at school.

The case remains under scrutiny from both criminal and child welfare systems. Joncky is currently facing felony charges, with a no-bond directive issued for at least one count. Meanwhile, another child from the home has been placed into state custody for safety concerns.

As the investigation continues, the Broward Sheriff’s Office is utilizing the school reports, medical findings, and the child’s statements as part of building their case. The legal proceedings are ongoing, and Joncky is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
