Florida man out on bail for domestic violence shoots his 38-year-old ex-wife

DELTONA, FL – A Florida man, recently released on bail for a domestic violence charge, fatally shot his ex-wife before leading police on a chase that ended with his suicide, authorities reported.

The tragic sequence of events unfolded early Monday morning when the body of 38-year-old Ashley Vaia was discovered by her teenage daughter at their Deltona home. Responding deputies confirmed her death shortly after arriving at 2:22 a.m.

Samuel Vaia, 33, who had just been released from jail following a domestic altercation, became the primary suspect. Law enforcement tracked his vehicle speeding northbound, leaving Volusia County. The pursuit ended in a crash, where officers found Vaia with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Just days before the incident, Samuel had been arrested for battery against Ashley on March 23. Although bonded out the next day, he was ordered to surrender his firearms to the authorities. However, according to Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood, Vaia retained at least one weapon despite having handed over three guns.

During a press briefing, Sheriff Chitwood underscored the limitations of protection orders, stating, “A protection order is just paper; it cannot assure safety.” He stressed that Samuel Vaia was resolute in his intent to harm Ashley.

The couple, separated at the time of the incident, shared a 2-year-old child. Ashley Vaia also had a 21-year-old child and another teenage daughter, who tragically found her mother deceased. The couple had reportedly been trying to reconcile when the argument that led to Samuel’s arrest erupted.

Following the crash, Samuel Vaia was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

This heart-wrenching event marks another grim reminder of the complex challenges surrounding domestic violence cases as community leaders call for more robust measures to protect victims.
