Father who wanted a son stabs his daughters aged 6 and 9 and his wife who was pregnant with another girl

MASONVILLE, NY – In a chilling case that shocked the community, a New York man was sentenced for the murder of his pregnant wife, allegedly driven by his disappointment over the gender of their unborn child. Drew Garnier, 33, admitted to killing 29-year-old Samantha Garnier, who was five months pregnant, and attacking their two young daughters during the violent incident on September 4, 2024.

Garnier confessed to the murder in March, acknowledging guilt in both the death of his wife and the assault on his daughters, then aged 6 and 9. The brutal act unfolded just days after Labor Day when New York State Police responded to a domestic disturbance at the family’s home in Masonville.

Upon arrival, Garnier surrendered, showing minor injuries. Samantha Garnier was airlifted to a nearby hospital but succumbed to her injuries, while her daughters survived the attack after receiving treatment for their wounds.

During Garnier’s sentencing, emotional testimony provided tragic insight into potential motives. Samantha’s father, delivering a victim impact statement, suggested that Garnier’s rage stemmed from the unborn child’s gender. “He had wanted a boy,” he told the court, adding that the trauma inflicted on the couple’s surviving children was profound.

In court, Garnier sought permission to maintain contact with his daughters while he serves his sentence, a request strongly opposed by Delaware County District Attorney Shawn Smith. The judge aligned with the prosecution, imposing no-contact orders extending until 2056, although allowing that the daughters might choose to reestablish contact in the future.

The presiding judge, John Hubbard, underscored the gravity of Garnier’s betrayal. “You took a life and injured your children,” Hubbard stated, emphasizing the trust and protection Garnier had irrevocably shattered.

Garnier’s plea agreement resulted in a 30-year prison sentence followed by 15 years of probation. Despite the severe legal consequences, the emotional aftermath continues to weigh heavily on those left behind. Samantha’s father has assumed guardianship of his granddaughters, vowing to protect them from any further harm.

The case highlights ongoing challenges with domestic violence and the devastating impact such crimes have on families and communities. It serves as a solemn reminder of the critical need for vigilance and support systems for those trapped in abusive environments.
