The collision resulted in the death of 23-year-old Sidney C. Benson, the driver of the car that was hit by the Greyhound bus. The impact caused the bus to veer off the road and overturn, leading to one fatality and several injuries. One person was transported to Huntsville Hospital Trauma Services in critical condition, while three others were taken to Huntsville Hospital in serious condition. Additionally, four individuals sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to Madison Hospital.
Emergency response teams, including ambulances and helicopters from HEMSI and assistance from Athens Limestone EMS, quickly arrived at the scene to provide aid. The following morning, Greyhound officials released a statement expressing regret for the accident and confirming that the bus was traveling from Tallahassee, Florida to Nashville, Tennessee at the time of the incident.
According to the statement, eight passengers and the bus driver were transported to nearby hospitals, with six of the passengers being treated and released.
