Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) criticized former President Donald Trump and Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) for their joint press conference on Friday. Swalwell slammed the two for discussing election integrity, given the looming indictments against Trump for alleged interference in the 2020 election.
During an appearance on CNN’s “Anderson Cooper 360,” Swalwell expressed his disbelief at the idea of Trump and Johnson lecturing on election integrity. He likened it to receiving a lecture on bank security from notorious criminals Bonnie and Clyde, highlighting the absurdity of their stance given their actions during the 2020 election.
The press conference held at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort saw Johnson advocating for legislation to prevent noncitizens from voting illegally. However, Swalwell pointed out that the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 had already prohibited foreign nationals from voting in federal elections, making Johnson’s legislation redundant.
As the controversy unfolded, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) called for Johnson’s removal as Speaker, questioning his fitness for the role. In response, Trump voiced his support for Johnson at the press conference, commending him for his performance under challenging circumstances.
