Elderly Oklahoma man’s desperate plea for help from 911 after wife cuts off his oxygen supply

CLAREMORE, OK – For decades, a Claremore man relied on the loving care often found in long marriages. But a recent emergency call turned his world upside down and thrust him into the center of a harrowing criminal case in Rogers County.

On Saturday night, the 77-year-old, whose name authorities have not released, found himself fighting for breath after his oxygen supply was allegedly cut off. According to investigators, facing mounting peril and unable to get help from his wife, he managed to call for emergency assistance. When deputies arrived, they discovered a situation that would launch a felony investigation and lead to the arrest of his wife, Naomi Austin.

Living with chronic health issues, the man depends on oxygen therapy just to make it through the day. For him, being suddenly disconnected from that vital apparatus isn’t just uncomfortable—it’s a threat to his life. When he told deputies that his wife not only unplugged his oxygen but also refused to reconnect it, authorities sprang into action.

This wasn’t the first time he had made such a plea for help. In early October, emergency personnel were called to the same house after a similar report, with the husband again claiming that his lifeline had been severed. Each call piled on new worries about what might be happening behind closed doors.

The case became even more troubling as investigators uncovered text messages and statements suggesting an ongoing threat. According to detectives, not only had Austin allegedly written about her hatred of her husband, but she also reportedly reached out to acquaintances inquiring about ways to hasten his death. The evidence, authorities say, shows a pattern of abuse and disregard for the vulnerable man’s well-being.

Despite the case against her, Austin has denied any malicious intent, insisting that her husband was confused or experiencing cognitive decline. However, law enforcement said physical evidence combined with digital communications provided a compelling case, leaving little doubt about the real danger facing the older man.

Rogers County Sheriff Scott Walton said the decision to arrest Austin, especially given her age, weighed heavily on officials. But, he added, they were left with no other choice in order to safeguard the victim’s health and dignity.

The victim’s situation has raised alarms among advocacy groups for seniors who warn that caretaker abuse, though often hidden, can devastate families and put some of society’s most vulnerable at risk. Community members in Claremore were also taken aback, with some neighbors admitting they would have never guessed such trouble could unfold so close to home.

Austin now faces solicitation for murder and caretaker abuse or exploitation charges and is scheduled for a court appearance on November 12. She remains in custody with no bond.

Meanwhile, the man at the heart of the case is recovering and has been placed under protective care. Authorities say they are committed to supporting his recovery as the legal process continues, stressing the importance of swift intervention for others who may be suffering in silence.
