Dog Owner Shocked to Find Euthanized Pet Up for Adoption at Rescue Group

Laurel, Maryland – After facing a difficult decision to euthanize her sick puppy, Kristie Pereira was shocked to discover him up for adoption at a local pet rescue organization. She had originally adopted the 2-month-old hound mix named Beau from Lost Dog & Cat Rescue Foundation in late 2022 for $450. The bond between Pereira and Beau grew quickly, with the puppy becoming a constant companion as she worked from home. However, it soon became evident that Beau was facing health issues.

Veterinary consultations revealed that Beau might have a neurological problem along with a potential liver issue. Despite efforts to diagnose and treat him, Beau’s condition continued to deteriorate, prompting discussions about euthanasia. Feeling conflicted, Pereira sought guidance from staff at Lost Dog & Cat Rescue, ultimately deciding to euthanize Beau in late March 2023 at a Maryland animal services center.

Upon visiting the rescue’s website during a trip to Maryland, Pereira was shocked to see Beau, now named Amos Hart, available for adoption. The rescue had taken Beau back from the shelter after determining that he did not need to be euthanized. Pereira, unaware of Beau’s condition and treatment, expressed her desire to reclaim him despite resistance from the rescue.

Despite the rescue’s decision not to return Beau, citing their mission to save adoptable dogs from euthanasia, Pereira felt mistreated and heartbroken. The rescue defended its actions, expressing that Pereira was informed of the importance of veterinary care and being present during euthanasia. Additionally, Montgomery County Animal Services, bound by contract to return surrendered animals to the rescue, stated that the situation was a civil matter between Pereira and the rescue.

As the dispute continues, Beau remains up for adoption on the rescue’s website, leaving Pereira determined to reunite with her beloved dog. The complex situation underscores the challenges faced by pet owners navigating difficult decisions about their furry companions’ welfare and the importance of clear communication between all parties involved.
