DENVER, Colo. — Two individuals are facing charges linked to the tragic death of a 2-year-old girl, whose body was found at a home in west Denver. The arrests mark a grim turn in what authorities are calling a severe case of child abuse.
Emergency responders received a 911 call early Sunday morning regarding an unresponsive child at a residence on South Vrain Street. Upon arrival, they discovered the lifeless body of the toddler, later identified as Valkyrie Erickson.
Nicholas Stout, 38, who is reportedly in a relationship with Valkyrie’s mother, was apprehended later that same day. He stands accused of first-degree murder and child abuse resulting in death. The following Tuesday, Valkyrie’s mother, Melissa Wayne, also 38, was taken into custody and charged with child abuse resulting in death.
Investigators uncovered unsettling allegations that heightened suspicions of foul play. Court documents reveal that Stout initially claimed Valkyrie sustained her injuries during a fall while jumping on a bed. He alleged he was attempting to save her when she struck her head against a piece of furniture.
However, as police delved deeper into the investigation, inconsistencies in Stout’s account began to surface. Stout suggested he had left the residence around midnight to buy cigarettes, claiming he was absent during the critical moments leading up to the girl’s death. This narrative was contradicted by statements from other residents.
A housemate, who had recently moved in, informed detectives that they often heard Stout yelling at Valkyrie, with distinct slapping sounds resonating from the bedroom. The witness recounted a particularly alarming incident late Friday night, noting loud arguments followed by an unsettling silence.
